Richard Sharpe has a Professorial level appointment in the Medical Research Council Human Reproductive Sciences Unit and heads a Research Team on ‘Male reproductive health’. He is the author of over 240 scientific papers. He has broad expertise in endocrinology, endocrine disruptors (phthalates/other plasticizers, pestcides, personal care products) and environmental/lifestyle effects (smoking, obesity, diet) on reproductive and other aspects of health. His most important current research interests are: (i) the role of perinatal development in the etiology of common human male reproductive disorders that manifest at birth (cryptorchidism, hypospadias) or in young adulthood (low sperm counts, testicular cancer, low testosterone levels), and (ii) the role of androgens in regulation of development and function of the male reproductive system, including spermatogenesis. He serves/has served on numerous UK government and other expert science advisory committees, grant awarding bodies etc and currently serves as Chairman of the UK Society for Endocrinology special interest group on ‘Endocrine disruptors’. He has given verbal evidence on endocrine disruptors to the Danish Parliament, a UK House of Lords Select Committee and the UK Royal Commission on environmental pollution. He has acted as an expert reviewer/adviser to US Government bodies on several occasions.
